Aptitude V/s. Right Attitude

Aptitude V/s. Right Attitude

November 03, 2024

After a lot of contemplation, I have concluded that success is a factor of right attitude rather than aptitude. You can be a person with an average aptitude, but if you have the right attitude, you are likely to be more successful. On the other hand, you may be a person with above average aptitude, but you do not have the right attitude, then your success will be lesser, than your actual potential.

I am not saying, aptitude is not important, what I am saying is - right attitude is more important.

I am carefully using my words here. The words are ‘right attitude’ and not just ‘attitude’ because excess attitude is arrogance and less attitude is diffidence.

So how does one define ‘right attitude’?

In my view, ‘right attitude’ is difficult to define, as it may differ from situation to situation, but I feel some basic ingredients of ‘right attitude’ would be:

·   Positive approach – this would mean, look at life positively, rather than complaining and being constantly unhappy about things in life. It takes a great amount of effort and discipline to develop a positive approach, but it is not impossible, and it is worth it.

·   Hero’s mindset v/s. Victim mindset – this in someway overlaps with the positive approach, but I want to specifically emphasise on this. Most people live with a victim mindset, rather than a Hero’s mindset. They constantly blame someone/ something for things which are going wrong/ have gone wrong in their life. The idea however is to live like a ‘Hero in your own story’. So next time observe your thought and feelings when something is not going your way. Disconnect yourself temporarily from the person/situation/ thought/ event and try to see things without the victim mindset (I am not saying without the victim mindset, but from a Hero’s mindset. I am saying - only without the victim mindset. Because once you start seeing things without the victim mindset, you will automatically see them from a Hero’s mindset!!) and then decide how you want to deal with such person/ situation/ thought or event.

·      Choose your battles – this again overlaps with the positive approach and the choice of mindset. Eventually, it is all about the ‘energy’ you put into a problem/situation, that determines its outcome for you. Choose your battles wisely - spend your energy for the right people/ situations, do not waste it by engaging in trivial matters or irrelevant situations. Try to be a happy person, by letting go of things which weigh you down. Change your perspective and move forward. There is no need to engage and fight every battle. By doing that, you’re putting yourself in a perpetual state of WAR, which makes you negative and does not allow you to create the environment for nurturing the right attitude.

As I write this blog, I can think of many other ingredients which define right attitude, and I am also realising that some of them are an ocean by themselves. I will try to cover some of these ingredients in my subsequent blogs. So write now, I will sign-off here…

Take care and be right (in your attitude)!!

I know it is easier said than done - but let us try to make an effort. One day at a time!
